New Lagos

[Lagos, Nigeria] I had just narrowly escaped a throttling for taking too many liberties in the kitchen of an Ajegunle bukateria when I stumbled into painter Joshua Mays in a back alley. All anguish from the tragic egusi stains on my jacket sleeve was momentarily abated when I noticed that Mr. Mays had recreated the towering landscape on a nearby wall.

I am the Black Gold of the Sun

As a boy, my father and other young children in the village of Ikire would squeal in terror at the sight of the shadowy masked figures on Odun Egungun. It was an annual ceremony wherein dancers in masquerade would pay tribute to the dead, thus ensuring their ancestors a place among the living. A spiritual antenna to the past, which made undying echoes into the future.
